Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation program used for
visual effects, animation, and
motion picture compositing. Film, television, and online video
production all employ After Effects. With its hundreds of effects, this
software is used to edit visuals during the post-production stage. This
enables you to incorporate multiple image and video layers into a single
scene.
Unlike in Premiere Pro, After Effects can manipulate vectors without
diminishing the original object's quality! This can help in telling a clear
and beautifully flowed story.
Compositing in...
Photoshop : To make everything
organized and simple to animate in After Effects, every layer
needs to be renamed and arranged appropriately.
After Effects : In essence, After Effects allows us
to import many materials, including pictures, video, vectors, and more. It's
necessary to arrange and synchronize every layer element with external
software platforms like Photoshop and Illustrator. After Effects files
link to their media instead of embedding it.

3. SELF-TITLED POSTER
3.1 Research
1. Write a biography about yourself :
INTRO:
Tell us about yourself
My name is Qistina, I am a 17 year old student studying BDCM at Taylor’s University. I really love seals and cats (I have only 2 cats and currently no seals). I am the third sibling to an older sister, older brother and younger brother. I’ve always wanted to try surfing but I unfortunately can’t swim myself…
PARAGRAPH 1:
What is your passion?
Ever since I was a kid, I have always been interested in animation.
Whether it be from Boboiboy or Studio Ghibli films, I appreciate any
genre of animation. It was only when I received an E grade for my IGCSE
Art subject that I started losing hope for my passion. Thankfully
though, my mom was really supportive in my journey being an artist and
so my passion for art and animation persevered through!
PARAGRAPH 2:
What motivates you to achieve your dream?
My dream is still a bit blurry to say the least but I still have the
general idea of working in the animation industry. The thought of being
able to work with other creatives to create a beautiful piece of art
excites me!
SUMMARY:
How do you want to your dream into an artwork?
I want to bring my love of colourfulness into the artwork and also try to include my love for the ocean (especially seals) as well as portray my anxiety through metaphorical means. I generally just want to have fun with this project because, with stressful and anxious I’ve been recently, it would be a nice change of pace.
2. Write a statement about your work :
INTRO:
Tell us about your work
My work is colourful and expressive! Both using a cartoony and oceanic theme.
PARAGRAPH 1:
What is the concept behind it?
I get nervous when I get phone calls, and the big ocean might be overwhelming, but sometimes you just have to take a moment to appreciate the scenery. I take this concept of the ocean and phone calls as being a metaphor behind a person’s capability to appreciate something in the midst of a stressful situation~
PARAGRAPH 2:
What is the message you want people to understand?
Sometimes the world may become a bit too much but you yourself can change into a positive mindset in which you stop to smell the flowers or hangout with seals :)
SUMMARY:
What is your motto/quote?
Let echoes of doubt die as you continue to shine!
3. Study and gather information about your topic (Moodboard - 3 references) :
I illustrated some elements in carboard style in Procreate.
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #5
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #6
I made an “editing” psd file where I cut out the shapes and put them together before gathering them into a proper file where I can edit their placement within the poster.
I also experimented with adjustment layers just to see what would look good for me to blend in with the Ocean background.
Using supplementary photos, I pieced together 3 different pictures
This was so I could get my arms to move in the final video without there being weird cut-outs
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #7
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #8
I added shadows to the hand to create a cohesive light source between the combine elements.
I had to scrap the original sketch a bit since I couldn't really make my cats cooperate into doing a perfect pose :’)
This one was really the only one that fit properly but it still looks a bit weird to me.
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #9
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #10
So, I made a new sketch similar to the previous one but had to exclude my cats )':
I added the illustrated elements and also a phone line to show connection between the ocean and cardboard parts.
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #11
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #12
I added a seal curiously peeking its head out in the corner of the frame.
I added text and lines to show the echoing ring coming from the telephone.
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #13
DIGITAL POSTER PROGRESS #14
I added a Hue and Saturation adjustment layer because I realised the colours were a bit to bright.
I tweaked a bit of the adjustment layers and added the final details!
After asking for feedback from Sir Fauzi, I got a thumbs up and continued to my animating.
3.3 Final Outcome
Fig 3.3.1 Self-Titled Poster Final
Title: Echoes Beneath The Surface
Artist Statement: Phone calls scare me. The ocean scares me. Whether I like it or not though, at some point I will have to face them. So, what better way to face both my fears than with a positive mindset?
The cartoony cardboard v.s. the realistic ocean represents the two sides of my mind that are always in conflict when it comes to responding to situations. As for the seal, it represents being curious yet also cautious, relating back to my anxiety.
4. SELF-TITLED ANIMATION
4.1 Research
I watched videos while making the poster about how to animate to prepare
myself before actually using After Effects and here are some of the great
videos:
Video 4.1.1 "After Effects CC: How To Center & Move Anchor Point" by Mike Murphy Co.
Video 4.1.2 "Beginner's Guide to Masking In Adobe After Effects" by Dansky.
Video 4.1.2 "After Effects Tutorial: Easily create a Blur Mask in desired" by Rizat Graphics.
This last one really helped me a TON with creating the cool water wave effect you'll see in the final outcome!
Video 4.1.2 "Easy Realistic Water Effect | After Effects Tutorial" by Hieu Vu.
4.2 Ideation
Unfortunately, I didn't really record much of the animation progress, since
I was a bit too invested in it that I forgot to (แต- แด -) But I managed
to find a screenshot of my organised layers in Photoshop before I brought
them over to After Effects:
Firstly, I want to say HOORAY!! to myself since I managed to get through a semester's worth of assignments! เดฆ്เดฆി ห͈̀꒳ห͈́ )✧ It was definitely a rough journey what with my anxiety coming in at the worst of times; especially during the last few weeks of this assignment (it definitely had an effect on my work but I managed to get work done so that's most important). Anyways though, I quite enjoyed this assignment actually. Having it be a joint assignment between IVN, DPI and Typography made it more fun and flexible to me as I got to show my illustrations for IVN, photography and editing skills for DPI and also my typographic skills for Typo! :-)
I definitely learned to be more aware of how I manage my time between assignments like juggling time for IVN or Typography or DPI. I still got a learning curve to go through but I'm glad I made it through the first hurdle ! ูฉ(หแห*)ู ♡ Thank you so much to my lecturers, hopefully we can see again soon during my next semesters maybe...
