Lecture 8: Digital Surrealism
Realism vs Surrealism
Realism takes from actual "reality" meaning it takes non-exotic and common things
from the real world.
Surrealism is a twist on realism; It delves into the subconscious, focusing mostly on
dream imagery and frequently seeking to warp the commonplace and what we take
to be reality.

What is Surrealism and how to achieve it
Surrealism refers to an art movement that focuses on using art forms to convey
the ideas and thoughts of the artist themselves in a dream-like manner.
To achieve surrealism, one must have the imagination to create:
- Dream-like scenes and symbolic images
- Unexpected, illogical justapositions
- Bizarre assemblages of ordinary objects
- Primitive or child-like images

1.2 Class Summaries
Week 9 :
Sir was unfortunately sick this week so we had a class online about our project.
Week 10 :
We went to the Photography Studio and got to take some pictures of our chosen objects! Sir demonstrated how we could position the lightboxes to create certain effects and such. I managed to take photos of my Polaroid camera and my yellow shirt. The rest of the items I took photos of in my DIY studio at home.
Week 11 :
Week 11 was done online because Sir has unfortunately caught an eye infection, meaning he couldn't come to campus for a couple of weeks. The class was a briefing of our final project as well as a final feedback session for Project 2B.

3.1 Research
2. Write a summary about your idea :
Since my references were of a combination of both food and non-food objects, I decided I wanted to go the same route with my product! First, I had to try and find items around my house that would match together:

Since my references were of a combination of both food and non-food objects, I decided I wanted to go the same route with my product! First, I had to try and find items around my house that would match together:
#1 : A camera and an oreo - The colour and shape of both the oreo and the lens cover of the camera match so I thought, "Why not combine them?".
#2 : A leek and a pencil - A fun way to imagine the shape of a pencil looking like a leek.
#3 : A yellow shirt and a slice of bread - I happened to have a yellow shirt that was similar to white bread. So, I imagined folding the shirt and combining the two since they so happen to be of similar shape as well!
#4 : A tart cookie and a polaroid camera - similar to Idea #1, I would use the tart cookie as replacement for the camera's lens as the tart cookie happens to have a hole in the middle with jam.
Firstly, I started by masking the two objects in separate psd files.
I combined them together into a single psd file for editing. I overlapped both
to ensure they both are of the same shape.
3. Sketches :
3.2 Ideation
I decided to go with the yellow shirt+bread idea!

Next, I masked out some parts that weren't overlapping from both objects to
create the shape in Fig 3.2.3. I played around with Curves, Multiply and Overlay
adjustment layers (Fig 3.2.4) to match the yellow shirt to the white
bread.

This is the result of the adjustment layers. I added the bread texture over
the shirt part to give that extra detail. Here, I also realised that the shirt
started to look more and more like cheese or butter on the bread with its
detailed seams acting like you just freshly spread some butter onto the bread.

Like the references I had in my moodboard, I decided to have a bright
background to make the whole photo "POP!" more haha. I went for a light blue
background to really give that "Sunshine" feel to the Shread (shirt+bread).
Along with that, I added some shadows and some reflected light using Multiply
and Soft Light blending layers (Fig 3.2.7) to give it a more natural
feel against the blue background.

Next, I added in some shadows on the background itself to have a believable
lightsource shining on the Shread like it was actually there during a
photoshoot ◝(แตแตแต)◜!
Finally, I did some final touch-ups on the Shread like removes some little
dots that weren.t supposed to be there and just overviewing each layer. After
that... I was done! ✧。ูฉ(หแห )ู✧*。
3.3 Final Outcome
Fig 3.3.1 Conceptual Product Photoshoot Final
Description: Due to the similar colours of both my yellow shirt and bread slice, I
thought it would be funny to have the edges of the folded shirt be the crust
of a bread slice.
When I worked with both objects, I realised that the shirt looked more and more like smooth butter that’d been spread onto the slice of bread; I had accidentally smudged parts of the shirt image and couldn’t undo it, but the combination of fine detailed threads of the shirt with smooth smudged parts really gave the vibe of spread butter.
And so, lo and behold, Buttered Shread was created.

4. REFLECTION
So far, I can say that this was my favourite activity/exercise to do
throughout the assignment! It was fun to sketch out and imagine silly ways
two combined objects could work (แตแตแต). During the process of
creating Butter Shread, I was also just enjoying every minute of it! It's
hard to explain why I really like this part specifically but maybe it's
because I'm more onto silly photographic edits than serious ones. Other
than that, I 'd say I left Project 2 happily ending with 2B despite how
rocky I started with 2A~
I also wanted to add that I saw my other classmates' works for 2B and they
were all very cute and some even went for the funny approach haha.
P.S. I actually did my DIY home photo studio right under my very busy
desk so I just wanted to add in that fun fact (เน>•̀เน)
