3. RATIONALE

3.1 My favourite Stop Motion Animations

Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death

Fig 3.1.1 Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death, 2015 (Source)

Studio: Aardman

Director: Nick Park

Story Summary: Wallace and Gromit have built a new bakery, and business is thriving, thanks in large part to a vicious Cereal Killer who has slaughtered all of the other bakers in town. Gromit is concerned that they may be next, but Wallace is unbothered because he has fallen in love. The 30-minute short film follows their shenanigans in managing their bakery and discovering the Cereal Killer.

Why I love it: I personally LOVE anything related to Wallace and Gromit; not only for the beautifully and stylistically clay animated stop-motion aspect but also just the hilarious dynamic between the two. Being exposed to the duo from their feature length film "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit", I was pleasantly surprised to know that their silly adventures were also portrayed in their short films. Specifically for this film, I find the premise to be very out-of-the-box despite being a murder mystery of sorts. I recommend you to watch it!

My Little Goat

Fig 3.1.2 My Little Goat, 2022 (Source)

Studio: -

Director: Tomoki Misato

Story SummaryMother Goat saves her kid goats from a wolf's stomach. But her eldest son, Toruku, is missing. One day, Mother Goat returns Toruku home, and the young boy must confront both his own fears and the mutilated bodies of his brothers and sisters. The story revolves around the themes of domestic and sexual abuse within a household of a wolf and goats, representative of the abusive father and the helpless mother and children respectively.

Why I love it: I often can't stomach (no pun intended) dark topics in films; often I find myself finding something funny to make out of it so I wouldn't have to face the dark reality of it. However, with My Little Goat, I find that nothing can really be made fun of in this grimly animated stop-motion short. Though it's only 10 minutes long, it still managed to give a gruesome twist enough time to really shock me. It's an extremely great short film, especially being a final project of the director's studies before graduation.

Hedgehog's Home

Fig 3.1.3 Hedgehog's Home, 2017 (Source)

Studio: Bonobo Studio

Director: Eva Cvijanoviฤ‡

Story Summary: Henry the Hedgehog lives proudly in the forest. He is a famous hunter within the forest, constantly getting praise from the other critters. One day though, a fox, bear and boar, envious of Henry's stature, plot together to hunt down Henry. The story follows the different schemes of the fox, bear and boar but ultimately, with the experienced hunter Henry the Hedgehog is, he emerges victorious and unscathed.

Why I love it: The way this short is structured makes it feel like a children's story book (in a good way) which I found out that it IS actually based off of a short children's book by Branko ฤ†opiฤ‡ of the same name. The style of this short is felt-like and it just adds to the softness of the vibe. Despite having quite a straightforward plot, I adore its simplicity!

Since I'm going to specialise in animation in the future, Mr. Martin advised I work on the stop-motion alone. So I will!

4. STOP MOTION VIDEO (MIB)

4.1 Shooting

Fig 4.1.1 Cut-out of character.

I took pictures of my Miles Morales figurine of different poses and printed them out on paper to cut-out and use. I decided to use this method because the figurine itself is very loose in its joints so I had to improvise on the style of stop-motion. I cut out parts of the joints so i could later move them individually during the animation process.

Fig 4.1.2 Drawing out background and other paper things.

I drew out the other main background and character elements using card paper and also some special paper I had on hand (Fig 4.1.2). It was quite simple since I stuck to a mostly black and white colour pallete.

Fig 4.1.3 Set-up.

I had to improvise a bit because my house doesn't really have enough clear space for me to properly set up a stop motion studio, so I made the studio under my desk which was slightly inconvenient but it did the job.

Overall, it took around 4 hours to complete the filming of all the scenes I needed.

4.2 Editing

Fig 4.2.1 Editing process #1.

Starting off, I imported all the clips in and re-ordered them to where they needed to be.

Fig 4.2.2 Editing process #2.

The clips together ended up being more than 30 seconds so I had to speed up the clips by 50% more.

Fig 4.2.3 Editing process #3.

Then, I made the ins-and-outs for the sound effects/music I imported. The sound effects I used included:

  • Gasp
  • Grunt
  • Sigh
  • Splash
  • Ocean Waves
  • Seagull noises
  • Fishing rod reeling in.
  • Thud etc.

I then put in the small graphics I drew on Procreate on iPad and put in keyframes to where they would appear in the video. In Fig 4.2.4 I used a smile to put on the laughing character.

Fig 4.2.5 Editing process #5.

After, I added the already edited sound effects and arranged to where they needed to be.

Fig 4.2.6 Editing process #6.

I had to adjust the pitch of some sound effects because they were a bit too high for the subject it was coming from. For example, the splash for when the big fish engulfs the boat, I wanted to add a splash sound effect but the original was too short and high pitched. Hence, I altered it.

I added a small ending text to give that short film vibe.

Finally, I exported the video using Adobe Media Encoder.

5. REFLECTION

I felt quite overwhelmed with this Project as I did have to work on it alone. One thing I found is having a person help you through repetitive tasks can be very helpful and I wished I realised that sooner. The tiring part of the whole project was mostly just cutting out the pieces and making sure my neck wasn't sore as I was crouching down under my desk to record everything. But I think everything went well in terms of end product since I liked editing the sound effects in to make it more silly and stuff.

Overall, my next planned personal stop-motion project will have to wait until I find a reliable partner!
