EXERCISES

Table of contents

1.  EXERCISE 1

2.  EXERCISE 2

3.  REFLECTION

1. EXERCISE 1

Task: In this exercise, you will build 5 simple 3D objects using polygon modeling tools in Autodesk Maya. The goal is to familiarize yourself with fundamental operations such as extrusion, scaling, beveling and combining primitives to form recognizable shapes.

2. EXERCISE 2 - CHESS BOARD

Task: Students will explore the design language of a classic object, the chess set, and reimagine the forms of the six standard pieces based on a theme or creative style. They will use critical creative thinking to analyse, re-design and model the full set of chess pieces in 3D.

3. REFLECTION

Overall, for these exercises, I enjoyed the process of making them! Like for Exercise 1, I liked challenging myself to create a bishop piece since I tried out booleans into it. Also playing around with lighting and materials helped me get used to Maya's workspace as it was my first time using it.

Then, creating that bishop piece helped with Exercise 2 because of how the structures are somewhat similar but then I had to incorporate an interesting theme into the whole chess piece set. To which I went for a rustic-esque wooden vibe to the pieces that had nails tacked on to it. In terms of difficulty, I tried experimenting on adding images as textures to Exercise 2 but it all became very pixelated but I decided to commit to it despite its low quality.

I'd say for exercises and my first time trying out Maya, I think I did quite well myself :)
