Week 8
Full-on feedback session for Project 1.
Week 9
I wasn't able to attend class this week as I was struggling to juggle some assignment deadlines which led to me unfortunately pushing Film Studies asides for my Advanced Animation (╥‸╥)
Week 10
Class today was online as Mr. Kanaan was feeling under the weather. We were briefed for our Project 3 (which I'm most excited for because there I'm able to actually draw out most of my ideas hehe) first before we went into feedback session.
Feedback:
- Don't have too big of a wall of text for your pitch.
- Be simple and concise.
- Have the story be presented intriguingly.
3. PROGRESSION
Task: The objective of this project is to produce a pitch bible for your short animation. The pitch bible will serve as a comprehensive document that effectively communicates the concept, characters, visual style, and potential of the animation to potential investors, production companies, or distributors.
3.1 Arranging Ideas
As this project is mostly just rearranging our initial story proposal to be presented as an interesting pitch bible, I went ahead and reformatted some info from the initial proposal in Google Docs so that it'd be easy for me to reference later when I'm assembling the pitch bible.
For a lot of the information that were word/paragraph-heavy, I had to simplify it as much as I could so that it wouldn't be too wordy when put into the pitch bible. So things like the character description I excluded things like the elevator scenario and focused on the main things like Jesse's physical appearance and her personality.
3.2 Concept Drawings
Character Design
I started by designing Jesse based on the character description I made in the proposal. However, I had to remove/add some aspects to her design like how originally I planned for her to be wearing headphones but I feel it wouldn't fit her design entirely so I removed it.
As for her added sea monster design, I focused on it being a mix of typical sea monster designs but adding jellyfish motifs to the design to add more uniqueness to it. But I realised there was a bit of disconnect between the designs so I added shapes to Jesse's normal design to allude to her sea monster form. That being her rounded hair and also wavy ends to her hair.
Tram Design
As the tram makes an appearance in the short and the main destination for Jesse, I thought "Why not?" and gave a design for the tram. It's a simple design but I wanted it to match with the vibe of the gloomy vibe of Hastings too. So, I gave it a mainly muted greenish pallete.
Cover Page
For the cover page, I wanted to show an interesting shot of an integral scene from the short. At first, I thought of just showing Jesse's full character body shot in the rain with her umbrella but it felt static. So, I drew out a scene where Jesse is cycling after the tram to give more intrigue and action to the cover.
Style Concept
I wanted to showcase more on the style of the short so I drew up a simple shot of Jesse in the tram with a little kid sitting next to her, looking curious. To describe the style, it's inspired by paintbrush strokes that are visible in paintings.
The colouring is also "unfinished" to give the a more textured feel to the style. I also made sure the characters popped out more than the background by having less lineart in the background.
Complimentary Visuals
With all the main illustrations done, I decided to draw up some complimentary visuals to add to the pitch bible. These were meant to be illustrations that accompanied the paragraphs for the synopsis.
The first visual I created was for the third paragraph (Act 3) -- which in the story, has water pouring over Jesse after she successfully lands at the station in time, leading to her sudden transformation into her sea monster form. To make it more interesting, I posed her to be more monster-like with the hunched back and hand out. And because of the fall, Jesse's nose starts to bleed which adds on to the monster effect, much to Jesse's dismay.
But I felt having her only in the illustration was not interesting enough so I quickly sketched out the crowd's reactions to her transformation.
The next visual was meant for the second paragraph of the synopsis (Act 2) -- which follows Jesse as she's chaotically weaves through the town's markets. This moment, however, is actually when Jesse takes the leap of faith on the bicycle to get to the station.
The initial sketch was a bit rough since this was a more action-heavy pose. But basically the pose is meant to be of her holding onto the bicycle as she launches up and she lets go of her umbrella to cover her head and face from the rain.
3.3 Presentation
I compiled everything into a Canva design and made sure the theming of the slides matched with the style of what I drew and also the vibe of the entire story as well. So for the entirety of the Pitch Bible, I went for a watercolour vibe but not too distracting of backgrounds. I mainly referenced one of the given past works; "Captain Steward" to format my pitch bible.
My first recording lasted less than 5 minutes so I decided to rerecord some parts so that it didn't feel too rushed and also that I could give out more information about the short. The final recording managed to reach around 6 and a half minutes !

5. REFLECTION
At first, I thought this project would be easy as it was mainly arranging the proposal to be an intriguing presentation. Working through it though did I realise it was alot more than that. Because of the need for visuals, I pushed myself a bit to make Jesse as interesting of a design as possible. That meant I spent quite a long time on the visuals that I pushed aside the contents of the pitch bible a bit.
So, I realise that perhaps I could have improved on making the pitch of my animated short's plot a bit more interesting rather than solely focusing on visuals. Despite that, I had a lot of fun with drawing out the visuals because it helped me visualise more of the animated short in my mind and it will definitely help with my final project especially when I come down to drawing out the storyboards.
I believe I learned a good bit from doing this project that I will definitely bring with into my future story pitches, mainly in that I could improve on my pitching skills.
