1. MODULE INFORMATION BOOKLET (MIB)
This is the Module Information Booklet for this module:
2. LECTURES
Week 6
Because of the road closures for the ASEAN Summit, most classes were held online including MGnC. We were introduced to "keying" which is a tool for whenever we use green screens. Mr. Fauzi also gave a brief introduction to our upcoming Project 2: Channel Bumper. I decided to partner up for this project with Janaan, a friend of mine in class ⸜(。˃ แต ˂ )⸝♡
Mr. Fauzi planned for a replacement class for Week 5 to be on Thursday afternoon, but I unfortunately could not make it as I was helping man a booth at an event on campus (╥﹏╥) But of course, I read through Week 5's materials.
Week 7
Mr. Fauzi taught us about the importance of file linking so that editing files within a composition in After Effects won't become tedious. He also cleared up a common confusion in the class about the difference between Project 2 and 3. Then it was feedback time for our progress on the project. Janaan was unfortunately not able to join class this week but I still drew up a storyboard based on our chosen brand just to have a proper view of how we could go for our project.
Feedback:
- Storyboard fits Project 3 more than Project 2 as it showcases the different outfits of the brand.
- Focus more on the logo animation and its reveal.
- Keep up the progress momentum.
Week 8
No classes due to Individual Learning Week. Despite that, Janaan and I met up during class day and planned out our different parts for the project. I would handle the intro and compositing whilst Janaan handled the logo animation (˶แต แต แต˶)
Week 9
We were shown briefly about how animatics and storyboards should look like for motion graphics. Afterwards, it was a feedback session.
Feedback:
- Good progress.
- Should have a better workflow by adding in background videos in Premiere Pro after creating the motion graphics composites in After Effects.
- Blur of the background video gives a nice tease.
3. PROJECT PROGRESSION
Task: "Students are to use information for any proposed channel (*existing or fictional), create mood-board that reflects their concept/idea style-guide that conveys final look and feel. Create storyboard or animatics that explore appropriate audio to uplift the motion tempo.
Students will start with sketches and test a wide range of conceptual ideas through digitization using the appropriate software. Students conclude by selecting and presenting their personal design interpretation in the instructed format/s."
3.1 Planning
Jaanan and I first listed possible brands we could try make our project based off of. We decided on local fashion brands as we thought it's be fun to work with the brand's models to make our Channel Identity Project next. The fashion brands we narrowed down to were:
- Bayu Somerset (Modernised Traditional Clothing for Women)
- KanoeWear (Modern Batik Clothing)
- KaptenBatik (Everyday Batik-Patterned Apparel ——mainly geared towards guys)
- Whimsigirl (Everyday Apparel for Women)
We both agreed that out of the 4, Bayu Somerset was the most interesting and fun brand-wise. And so, we started on our moodboards and such.
~~~
From researching the brand, it was clear that Bayu Somerset was a very poppy and colourful fashion brand aimed towards young adults. The fonts they use also happen to have the word "Pop" in its name too (Poppins). Janaan and I loved the look and vibe of the models in the website too as they were sometimes in fun and whimsical poses and other times in elegant and beautiful ones. All the colours used for the site and social media pages were vibrant --- mainly pinks or warm colours.
As for the style guide, we looked up Bayu Somerset's logo and found three different variations. This style guide gave us a good sense of the direction we were going to for especially for when we create a teaser of sorts based on Bayu Somerset's fun yet bold branding.
From there, I quickly created a storyboard loosely based on inspirations from Pinterest.
Feedback:
- Storyboard fits Project 3 more than Project 2 as it showcases the different outfits of the brand.
- Focus more on the logo animation and its reveal.
- Keep up the progress momentum.
After the feedback, Janaan and I met up and planned out our different parts for the project. Before that, we came up with some ideas for the channel bumper.
Jaanan proposed an idea for the logo reveal to be like flipping cards. We made a mock layout of how the cards would go (Fig. 3.1.4) For this idea, she was inspired by this motion graphic on Pinterest: https://pin.it/r2MaXVpes
Before we went all in, we came up with another idea as well. Inspired by this Pinterest post: https://pin.it/1EqQAUxBl , we were planning for it to be BAYU SOMERSET sliding through the video and the negative space would have existing videos from their Instagram page. Then at the end, the video would turn to white and the Bayu Somerset would appear.
We both decided we liked Idea #2 more as it felt more "teaser-like" than Idea #1 . From there, I helped create the storyboard that will help guide us both in our respective parts. Speaking of which, we decided that I'd I would handle the intro and compositing/compilation whilst Janaan handled the logo animation.
3.2 After Effects
I started my part by typing out the Bayu Somerset logo into Illustrator using the brand's font, Poppins. I used the Extra Bold type as it gave more way for the background videos to appear.
To make sure the letters were in the negative space, I added a rectangle the size of the canvas and played around with the pathfinder tool.
Afterwards, I exported the shape into AE and began woring on my composites. I added in a video from Bayu Somerset's Instagram that both Janaan and I agreed would look nice in the background. I had to first adjust some segments though as the original video was made for a mobile phone format.
When zooming in though, I found that the video became pixelated. So to combat this, I decided to add a creative decision of blurring it slightly which would prove to look really nice against the moving Bayu Somerset text.
For the end, it was just a simple fade to white. But to add a but of intrigue to it, I added some flowers that slide in when the logo was supposed to appear.
Feedback:
- Good progress.
- Should have a better workflow by adding in background videos in Premiere Pro after creating the motion graphics composites in After Effects.
- Blur of the background video gives a nice tease.
After confirming with Janaan of her two different versions of the logo animation (check out her progress in the Canva Link), I added the composite into the AE file and added some finishing touch-ups with the flowers' positions.
3.3 Compositing
I followed Mr. Fauzi's advice by only adding in the background videos when compositing everything in Premiere Pro.
As for the background songs, I chose between three different songs --- one that was picked from the social media page of Bayu Somerset, and two were instrumentals from recently popular Malaysian songs. Janaan and I decided to chose for Malaysian songs with traditional instruments because Bayu Somerset's mission is to modernise traditional clothing.
The Malaysian songs being:
In the end, we went for Kumbang Bunga by Siti Nurhaliza because it fit the vibe nicely.
4. REFLECTION
After this project, I learnt better ways to work with different programs to achieve a better workflow. I was fortunate to pair up with a familiar friend from a past semester and we ended up making a really great team! So safe to say, this project went smoothly and I'm satisfied with our outcome! Though I wished I got to explore more onto logo animation, observing how Janaan created the logo animation felt nice because I could take some notes for my future projects. I was also pleased to see that we chose a local fashion brand (Bayu Somerset) because it has always been in my intrigue of brands to possibly work for as I really love their image.
Overall, this project has been very fun to work on! I hope our Project 3 will go as smoothly as this has as well (˶˃ แต ˂˶)
