2. LECTURES

Week 9

We were shown briefly about how animatics and storyboards should look like for motion graphics. Afterwards, it was a feedback session for Project 2.

Week 10

We were shown a quick video on Motion Tracking that we could utilise for our Project 4. I was thinking I could use it to create hand drawn lines over real life footage but I didn't cement Project 4's idea yet so I focused back to Project 3.

Janaan wasn't able to attend class today so I presented our initial storyboard and animatic to Mr. Fauzi.

Feedback:

  • All is good.
  • There are some parts where they stay a bit too long.
  • To fix that, add in the proposed text transitions.
  • That way, the client can see why each scene is that long.

Week 11

Today's class was held online but still went to campus because of a previous morning class ദ്ദി ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ ) It was mainly feedback session where Janaan helped present our progress to Mr. Fauzi and mentioned how in Week 10, we met up to discuss more about the direction of our channel ident; in which led to us changing the initial storyboard and animatic to something different.

Feedback:

  • Everything looks good.
  • The composition is there and solid.
  • Keep up the progress!

3. PROJECT PROGRESSION

Task: "Students will synthesis the knowledge gained in Task 1 and 2 for application in Task 3. Students are to continue with previously chosen channel in Task 2 to create a channel ident motion graphic video.

Students will start with thumbnail sketches and test a wide range of conceptual ideas through digitization using the appropriate software. Students conclude by selecting and presenting their proposed channel bumper interpretation in the instructed format/s."

3.1 Planning

Both Janaan and I were busy focusing on Project 2 during Week 9 so our progress officially started on Tuesday of Week 10. That meant during class on Monday, I presented a previous storyboard that I reworked to be more fitting to how a channel ident should be.

To which I created an animatic for but unfortunately lost the file (╥﹏╥). I did manage to present it to Mr. Fauzi though and he gave some feedback.

Feedback:

  • All is good.
  • There are some parts where they stay a bit too long.
  • To fix that, add in the proposed text transitions.
  • That way, the client can see why each scene/shot is that long.

The day after class though, Janaan and I met up to discuss more properly about the project and thought out some ideas for the channel ident. We decided to take some elements from the initial storyboard to make a new one. We first mainly focused on the intro of the channel ident in which we had two main ideas: a checkered flower pattern or a blooming flower concept

Fig 3.1.3 Intro Idea #2.

We decided to go for the blooming flower intro because we felt that the checkered flower design could be a bit too busy and might take a while for us to do which we also had to consider because of the remaining time to finish our project.

From there, we made a moodboard for both our intro and the rest of the composition. We initially wanted to do something along the lines of a spring collection for the 2026 but we settled on doing an ongoing November collection that Bayu Somerset had because it felt more relevant.

Fig 3.1.4 Channel Ident Moodboard.

For our channel ident, we decided to base it off of inspirations we found on Pinterest that used a slide movement to showcase the models and clothing. The setting we picked for it would be like a sort of flower garden that was inspired by another post of Pinterest but we found coincidentally was already a concept with one of Bayu Somerset's photoshoot!

So everything clicked and we started creating the storyboard for the new concept.

Moving to the animatic, I made a simple one that showcased the timing for every shot/scene.

After having all the plans done, we divided the work into: Intro & Compositing; Models Flower Garden & Logo Reveal. I really wanted to try out to animate the flower bloom so I took the Intro & Compositing work whilst Janaan did the latter.

3.2 After Effects

I started of with animating the flower blooming first. I took the flower we used in our story board and I thought it really fit well with the composition.

I first thought that animating this would be a bit hard as I searched for tutorials and many were using bones to animate singular petals (which used a paid plugin that I didn't have :‹). But I explored after effects on my own for a bit and realised I could just mask each petal and use distort warp effect for each of them.

Then it was only just keyframing the flower bud to full flower transition left.

Next, I worked on the text animation. The initial plan was for the text to come out of the flower as it bloomed and so, I worked on that as shown in the video below.

However, after discussing with Janaan, she mentioned that maybe a simple fade up effect would be cleaner for the text to appear. And I also felt like the timing of the text appearing like it currently is feels a bit off too and clashed a bit with the flower bloom. And so, I went to re-editing the text composition to make it have a simpler fade-up by word animate-in and a smooth slide out for "This November 2025".

Afterwards, I animated the flower breeze. This was a simpler animation as it was mainly playing around with curves of the movement between keyframes. I made it so it starts with small flowers in a "1, 2, 3" movement before the bigger flowers fly past to cover the screen.

Finally, I compiled every composition (3) into one composition.

As Janaan handled her part of the Model & Flower Garden and Logo Reveal, this is her process through her part:

3.3 Compositing

After I had both Janaan and my composites, I started to compile everything into Premiere Pro. Before that, I exported my composite as .mov because I wanted it to be transparent especially for the flower breeze transition to Janaan's part.

Fig 3.3.1 Compiling all composites and editing sound/music.

The main parts I focused on were the music and sound effects. The music was chosen when we met up to discuss about the storyboards an such. We picked a spring-vibe song to match with the feel of the collection of clothing we chose to showcase in the ident. I wanted to use Freesound to get the sound effects but the site was down for some reason so I went to Pixabay instead. These were sound effects chosen:

  • Leaves rustling (for the flowers)
  • Woosh (for transitions)

4. REFLECTION

I had a lot of fun on this project! From brainstorming ideas with Janaan and actually animating my part of the project, There wasn't really a dull moment to be had during this project ◝(ᵔᗜᵔ)◜ We were able to make a really nice final product that felt satisfactory for each of our own hard works. I especially loved how Janaan handled her part of the Model Flower Garden composite.

As for individual learnings, I managed to explore After Effects more, mainly on warping/distort warping. I didn't realise how nice the end flower bloom would look when I used distort warp but it ended up being really nice! And I for one feel proud of myself hehe

While doing this project actually, I worked on a video edit for a friend of mine and I used After Effects for most of the effects and I managed to learn more about Motion Tracking with text! So it was a nice coincidental extra learning I got alongside this Project as well.

Overall, I'm leaving this project feeling very fulfilled and am somewhat confident going into my final project (˶ˆᗜˆ˵)
